The Beast from the Sea

1 And the dragon stood on the sand of the ^{▼▼Lit sea}seashore.

Then I saw a ^bbeast coming up out of the sea, having ^cten horns and ^dseven heads, and on his horns were ^eten crowns, and on his heads were ^fblasphemous names. 2 And the beast that I saw was ^glike a leopard, and his feet were like those of ^ha bear, and his mouth like the mouth of ⁱa lion. And the ^jdragon gave him his power and his ^kthrone, and great authority. 3 I saw one of his heads as if it had been ^{▼▼Lit slaughtered to death}fatally wounded, and his ^mfatal wound was healed. And the whole earth ⁿwas amazed and followed after the beast; 4 they worshiped the ^odragon because he ^pgave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “ ^qWho is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?” 5 A mouth was given to him ^rspeaking ^{▼▼Lit great things}arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for ^tforty-two months was given to him. 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, ^uthose who dwell in heaven.

7 It was also given to him to ^vmake war with the ^{▼▼Lit holy ones; i.e., God’s people}saints and to overcome them, and authority was given to him over ^xevery tribe, people, language, and nation. 8 All who ^ylive on the earth will worship him, everyone ^zwhose name has not been ^{▼▼Or written in the book...slain from the foundation of the world}written ^absince the foundation of the world in the ^acbook of life of ^adthe Lamb who has been slaughtered. 9 ^aeIf anyone has an ear, let him hear. 10 ^afIf anyone ^{▼▼Or leads into captivity}is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; ^ahif anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Here is ^aithe ^{▼▼Or steadfastness}perseverance and the faith of the ^{▼▼See note v 7}saints.

The Beast from the Earth

11 Then ^alI saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had ^amtwo horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a ^andragon. 12 He ^aoexercises all the authority of the first beast ^{▼▼Or by his authority
,} ^aqin his presence. And he makes ^arthe earth and those who live on it ^asworship the first beast, whose ^atfatal wound was healed. 13 He ^auperforms great signs, so that he even makes ^avfire come down out of the sky to the earth in the presence of people. 14 And he ^awdeceives ^axthose who live on the earth because of ^aythe signs which it was given him to perform ^{▼▼Or by the authority of
,} ^bain the presence of the beast, telling those who live on the earth to make an image to the beast who *had the ^bbwound of the sword and has come to life. 15 And it was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast would even ^{▼▼One early ms speak, and he will cause}speak and cause ^bdall who do not ^beworship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 And he causes all, ^bfthe small and the great, the rich and the poor, and the free and the slaves, ^{▼▼Lit so that they give them a mark}to be given a ^bhmark on their right hands or on their foreheads, 17 and he decrees that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the ^bimark, either ^bjthe name of the beast or ^bkthe number of his name. 18 ^blHere is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that ^bmof a ^{▼▼Or human}man; and his number is ^{▼▼I.e., spelled out in Gr as 600 + 60 + 6; one early ms has the letters for 616}six hundred and sixty-six.
